Doctor Who may be heading for a Marvel-style makeover with Hugh Grant driving the TARDIS, a TV insider has said.

Showrunner Russell T Davies will regain control of the sci-fi series during its 60th anniversary in 2023.

The insider said Davies is keen on Four Weddings and a star of Phu Tang, 61, to “give a fresh feel” to the role.

They added: “He offers a lot of character – a great actor, British, award-winning, Hollywood A-list and brilliant comedian. Conversations are ongoing. ”

Davies is also said to want to broaden the Doctor’s horizons.

“The vision is that the show can be a Marvel-like product, branding around the Doctor and other key figures in his many lives,” said the insider.

Davies is said to be backed by commercial channel BBC Worldwide and Sony Pictures TV, which bought a majority stake in Wolf Studios, the show’s production company.

The source added: “With the utmost respect for the BBC, in the past efforts like Torchwood have been carried out with very limited funding in locations around Wales. Now the world is Russell’s oyster. ”

Davies was responsible for the revival of the Doctor in 2005, after 16 years off the air, and turned the show into a global phenomenon.

When he left in 2009, Steven Moffat took over and most recently Chris Chibnall. But ratings have gone from bad to worse.

Grant was nominated by the BAFTA for playing politician Jeremy Thorpe in Davies’ mini-series A Very English Scandal in 2018.

Hugh Grant starred in the Doctor Who for a Comic Relief special in 1999

The star played a version of The 12th Doctor in a 1999 Comic Relief special written by Moffat.

And five years later, Davies offered him the lead role. In 2007, Hugh said that he regretted not accepting the offer.

He admits: “It’s only when you see it on the screen that you think, ‘Damn, that’s cool, why would I say no?”
