Hugh Grant says Love’s Downing Street dance scene was ‘awesome’

Hugh Grant said his now-iconic Downing Street dance from the 2003 Christmas classic Love Realistic was “the most thrilling scene ever made for a movie”.

The 62-year-old actor, who plays the newly elected UK Prime Minister David in the film, said he thought he would “hate doing it” when he first read the script.

In the scene where he dances emphatically around Number 10’s office to The Pointer Sisters’ 1983 hit Jump, before being caught by a private secretary.

The dance has been imitated by internet users in the nearly 20 years since the film’s release, with many users imitating Grant’s hip wiggles.

Speaking to ABC news host Diane Sawyer during the 20th Anniversary Special of True Love, Grant admitted that “some people like (the scene)”.

“I think I saw it in the script and thought, ‘I’m going to hate doing that. No Englishman can dance when they’re awake at 8am,” he said.

“And to this day, you know, there’s a lot of people, and I agree with them, and we think that’s the most horrible scene that’s ever happened to a movie.

“But then some people liked it.”

The actor also stated that his idea was for the secretary, played by the late Meg Wynn Owen, to catch him midway.

“I would consider myself the one who helped the secretary catch me… genius,” he said with a laugh.

The film’s screenwriter Richard Curtis said Grant was “discomfortable” in carrying out the routine work, but completed it due to “contractual obligations”.

“I think he was hoping I (would be) sick or something and they would say, ‘Oh, what a pity to miss that dance scene’.

He’s grumpy but he knows he has to follow his contractual obligations.
