Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3

Ryan Reynolds has announced that Hugh Jackman will reprise his role as Wolverine in the upcoming Deadpool 3 movie.

The Deadpool character first made it to the big screen in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine before getting her own spin-off series.

Reynolds, 45, will reprise the title role as the vulgar antihero in the third installment following the success of the 2016 original and 2018 sequel.

On Tuesday, he announced that Wolverine will also appear in the third film.

The actor shared a video on Twitter in which he gently poked fun at the process behind filming a new Deadpool movie before announcing the big news.

He said: “We’re very sad to have missed D23, but we’ve been working very hard on the next Deadpool movie for quite some time.

“I really had to search my soul on this case, his first appearance in the MCU obviously has to feel special. We need to stay true to character, find new depth and motivation, new meaning.

“Every Deadpool needs to stand out and stand out from the rest. It was an incredible challenge that forced me to reach deep within and I have nothing.

“Just completely empty up here and frightening. But we had an idea.

“Hey Hugh, do you want to play Wolverine again?”

Jackman, 53, who appears to be walking up the stairs and eating food behind Reynolds, said: “Yeah sure Ryan.”

The actor, who played the Marvel character in eight X-Men films from 2000 to 2016, last starred as Wolverine in the 2017 standalone film Logan.

He had a brief appearance in the second Deadpool film, but had previously ruled out the possibility of a crossover film between his character and Reynolds’ foul-mouthed unlikely superhero.

In March, Reynolds confirmed the second sequel would be directed by Shawn Levy, having worked on the 2021 action comedy Free Guy and the 2022 re-released sci-fi film The Adam Project.

It’s another change of director for the Marvel franchise, with the original 2016 Deadpool directed by Tim Miller and the sequel by David Leitch.

It’s also the first Deadpool film since Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox, which distributed the first two installments.

In the video, Reynolds confirmed the film’s “Deadpool 3” start date of September 6, 2024. Hugh Jackman will return as Wolverine in Deadpool 3
