One of the things I think is hysterical is that there is very little nod to what the future will look like, TotoPOTUS is hysterical, and the fruit disappears. So are there other little things that you have a vision of the future exactly? Or are they just some fun stuff popping up in the writer’s room?
Iannucci: I’d like to fill in some details as we go along. I have an overall conception of what it should be like on Earth. You look at the map at a certain point, you can see that the East and West seas of America have come a considerable distance. Right. We’re out of stock, is it camels and fruit or something like that?
Iannucci: Yes, they went. They have already gone.
Laurie: And America is now basically Buy Louisiana and nothing else. YES.
That can happen!
Iannucci: But we see, I think in episode 5, we see that TotoPOTUS is really all the kids that grew up from the big tech companies running the country. But someone told me that’s exactly what they wanted to do. That’s exactly what some of them think they should do. Because they have all our data, why shouldn’t they run the country? So that’s the scary thing. We reinvent something and then we realize, “Oh my God, that’s true.”
Laurie: I just think about Murdoch, I think Rupert Murdoch belongs to this generation. He’s old enough to have kids who are actually the main players in the game now. He established one or maybe two generations of a dynasty. And I suppose that’s going to happen – Oh my God, now that you say it, it seems like other people, [Richard] Branson has to be 70, right?
But the others, are [Elon] Musk and [Jeff] Bezos in his 50s? Maybe their kids haven’t gone to world domination school. But when they graduated, we all had a better look, right? Oh, lord.
