Human remains found in River Severn and ‘considerable time in water’

Human remains were discovered in the River Severn by a member of the public.

A passer-by in the Shropshire village of Cressage called police after spotting human remains in the water.

Officials later confirmed the grim discovery and that the remains had been submerged under water for a “considerable amount of time.”

Emergency services were called to the incident just before 9:15 p.m. Saturday, where they removed the remains from the water.

The cause of death is not known at this time and an investigation has been launched to find out what led them to be there.

West Mercia Police said in a statement: “They are believed to have been in the water for a considerable time.

“The death is currently being treated as unexplained. An investigation has been launched and all lines of investigation are being investigated.”

Detective Chief Inspector John Weaver said: “We are at a very early stage in this investigation and the investigation is ongoing.

“Our priority at this stage is to identify the deceased.

“The remains are being forensically examined and the results will guide the next steps in our investigation.

“This could be a lengthy process but we will update the public in due course.”

A police presence will be at the scene in the coming days as officers continue their investigation into the grisly find.
