LIFE on Earth could have originated from a planet a trillion kilometers away, scientists suggest – meaning we could be extraterrestrials.
The chemical “building blocks” of our DNA were first identified in asteroids that struck our planet billions of years ago.
It means that the seeds of life were likely planted here from elsewhere in the universe – and humans could thrive on other planets far, far away.
Samples from three carbon-rich meteorites named Murchison, Murray and Tagish Lake were analyzed using cutting-edge techniques.
Prof Yasuhiro Oba from the University of Hokkaido, Japan, said: “We have found a variety of organic materials, including nucleobases – our basic building blocks of life.
“These may have been brought to Earth four billion years ago by asteroids, meteorites, comets and interplanetary dust particles when our planet was bombarded with debris from space.
“We believe that the influx of these organic matter played an important role in the evolution of life on Earth.
“This is a very exciting discovery that advances our understanding of how life began.
Two types of chemical building blocks, or nucleobases, are needed to form DNA and RNA – the basis of life on Earth.
These are called pyrimidines and purines.
So far, only purines have been identified in meteorites.
But Prof Oba’s team discovered pyrimidines in laboratory experiments that simulated conditions in the interstellar media – the space between stars.
The findings are included in a new study published in Nature Communications.
