It had all the makings of a bombastic “October surprise,” Gerard Baker said in The Wall Street Journal. Just three weeks before the 2020 presidential election, the New York Post reported that a laptop belonging to Joe Biden’s son Hunter was found at a Delaware repair shop containing “all sorts of embarrassing emails.” They suggested he “sold his high-level family connections” while working for a Ukrainian energy company, possibly even securing a cut for his father.
It should have been a big story — it could have swayed the election — but it died a death after the mainstream press and tech companies dismissed it as Russian disinformation. It was nothing like that. Finally, last week, the New York Times admitted that the emails were authentic.
In fairness, journalists have every reason to be cautious, said Philip Bump The Washington Post. When Rupert Murdoch’s own Post published the report, Donald Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani had spent months openly digging for “dirt” on Hunter Biden. The Post refused to let other media organizations examine the laptop’s hard drives, and no one could explain why the repair shop owner finally gave the laptop to Giuliani. Given Russian interference in the 2016 election, the mainstream media reacted with understandable suspicion.
Be honest, Jacob Siegel continued tablet magazine: This is about partisanship, plain and simple. Over the past five years, the mainstream media has appeared to bow to a new “cadre of fact-checkers” who are said to ensure its rigorous objectivity. Yet when it comes down to it, they are only interested in corroborating facts consistent with their own preferred narrative.
People were far too eager to dismiss that story, Ben Weingarten agreed news week. More than 50 former intelligence officials signed a letter publicly expressing their belief that it had “all the classic hallmarks of a Russian intelligence operation.” They have shown no remorse for their misleading intervention.
As for the New York Times, the only reason it has become clear now is that it has become impossible to cover the federal investigation into Hunter Biden – which could result in him being charged with violating foreign lobbying and money laundering laws becomes – not to mention the laptop. This is a truly shocking case, and the mainstream media needs to “score the score”.
