‘Hurt’ remains in Dublin’s squad from last year – Hannah Tyrrell

Dublin women’s soccer star Hannah Tyrrell admits the squad is still “hurt” after last year’s final defeat by Meath.

Nick Bohan’s side went into the decider at Croke Park as heavy favorites only for the Royals to continue their brilliant run and claim their first senior title.

Tyrrell, who returned to the Dublin team for last season after years with the international rugby team, is confident the Dubs can right the wrongs of this campaign.

“It’s hard for me to measure because I wasn’t part of the winning squad and I don’t know how it used to be,” she said.

“Last year was my first year and I really enjoyed it, but it didn’t go the way we wanted it to. This year we set out with the same determination. Our goal is to win All-Ireland, we have to go through a process to get there.

“Yes there is that pain that drives me and others but much like the Donegal game you try to learn from it and play one game at a time.”

Dublin’s rivalry with Meath has been building since that All-Ireland final. Tyrrell kicked the winner free on death to secure a victory at Navan. However, Dublin’s pockets were nicked by Donegal in the league semi-finals with two late goals while the Royals would eventually go on to clinch more titles.

Dublin’s championship campaign begins this weekend when they take on Westmeath in Leinster, with All-Ireland competition due to start in June.

“I haven’t been involved in the Leinster Championship since my debut in 2011 and didn’t come on the pitch that day. Provided I get a start, (I will) get my debut at Leinster. It’s great to have more senior teams (in Leinster). We want more games to be played against each other every year and this is an opportunity for that.” ‘Hurt’ remains in Dublin’s squad from last year – Hannah Tyrrell
