DEAR DEIDRE: WEEKS before I met my husband, he raped a woman – and I only found out when he told me about it years later while we were at the local pub.
I was in excruciating pain and then realized that I didn’t know who I was going to marry.

We met in 2010 and got married two years later. The marriage was almost in trouble from the start because my husband used to beat me up when he was drunk.
He’s upset and jealous and lies about everything as long as it makes him look like a good man. We have a five year old daughter.
After learning he had sex with this woman, who was too drunk to consent, I stopped sleeping with him and avoided him as much as I could.
I’m 41 and my husband 43. Recently he complained about his lack of sex and affection.
All issues receive a personal response, usually within 24 hours on weekdays.
I told him my opinion of him had changed since he told me about the rape. He got on his nerves, lost his temper, and yelled at me that it wasn’t rape.
I have already started the divorce proceedings, but I am wondering if I should report him to the police or not.
DEIDRE SAYS: Learning about her husband’s past changed all that. Contact Rape Crisis (rapecrisis.org.uk 0808 802 9999 when they can talk to you about going to the police.
The person being raped deserves help and support.
Your husband can still be held criminally responsible for this rape even though time has passed.
