Hyundai scores a hat-trick as a sign of the future for a new wave of electric vehicles

It’s not too often for an automaker to take home three major awards at a global ceremony, but that’s what Hyundai achieved this week when it landed triple at the World Car of the Year Awards.

He received the award for overall winner, first EV car of the year and car design of the year.

The reason for the sensational breakthrough was the electric crossover Ioniq 5.

Close competition in the finals came from the other two: the popular KIA EV6 (KIA is part of the Hyundai family) and Ford’s Mustang Mach-e.

The World Car judges selected the Hyundai (below) from an initial entry list of 28 vehicles and then selected it from three finalists.

I voted for the KIA and the Ioniq 5 in that order, but there was only one point between them. The votes were tabulated by KPMG.

The Ioniq 5, which has been available here since the end of last year, costs from 38,995 euros.

The victories underscore Hyundai’s growing position as a key player on the global front – and beware, there are many more electric vehicles to come.

I get a real sense of the global village when I see cars I’ve driven on the roads of Ireland – some of which you may have already bought or ordered – making it to the top.

For example, the Toyota Yaris Cross was chosen as the winner in the “World Urban Car 2022” category. It beat the Opel Mokka and the Volkswagen Taigun from a final list. The same applies to the Audi e-tron GT, which was voted World Performance Car of the Year.

And for the record, this year’s World Luxury Car is the Mercedes EQS. Now for next year.
