I checked myself into rehab to help maintain sobriety

ALAN Carr’s ex-husband Paul Drayton has revealed to fans that he signed up for rehab to help him stay sober after the breakup.

The TV comedian and party organizer released a joint statement Friday morning to confirm they are nearing the end of their three-year marriage.

Paul, 50 years old, took to Instagram to follow up with a statement of his own, telling fans he had “tested himself into rehab” to protect himself.

“I am saddened to share the news that Alan and I have jointly decided to end our marriage,” he wrote alongside a sunset moment.

“This decision has been very difficult for us and we part with great memories and continue the love and friendship for each other as we go our separate ways.

“As part of my own journey, I took the initiative to head to the rehab facility at New Year’s Eve to get the help and support I needed during this challenging time.”

Paul went on to detail how this “wasn’t an easy step to take” but was aware it was “the right step forward” for himself and 45-year-old Alan.

He continued: “The last few years have been challenging to say the least, as it has been for so many others.

“I remain deeply committed to my journey of sanity and strength. I thank you all for your kindness and support. Peace and love.”

Farewell to Paul face jail time for drinking and driving after crashing his car after a public battle with alcoholism.

He is said to have exceeded the legal limit for drinking 4 times as he backed into a police car – narrowly missing his mother with a stroller.

A statement released by Alan’s agent read: “After 13 years as a married couple and three years together, Alan Carr and Paul Drayton are pleased to announce that they are separating.

“They have together and amicably made the difficult decision to divorce and go their separate ways. We ask that their privacy be respected at this sensitive time.”

The couple previously dated for 10 years before Paul proposed in 2016.

He surprised Alan by hiding his engagement ring in Alan’s dessert during a romantic vacation in Indonesia.

Then, in 2018, Alan’s best friend Adele ordained so she could celebrate at the comedian’s wedding.

The superstar singer called Alan and Paul in her LA garden for their first dance, and then took the three of them to Las Vegas to see singer Celine Dion perform.

But not long after their honeymoon in Mexico, Paul sought help with alcoholism and entered rehab.

The pandemic also made it difficult for Paul, who raised concerns when he Post a photo of yourself with a black eye last August and told a fan “we had a bad line”.

He later revealed that he caused his own black eye – by punching himself in the face.

Paul publicly apologized to Alan, saying: “I feel very fragile at the moment and want to say that Alan will not and has never hit me and I am very disappointed that he has to deal with this today.”

Alan also insists he is not responsible for the injury. He said Paul was drinking again – and he was supporting his husband through a difficult time.

Alan told The Sun: “While I was filming on location a few weeks ago, Paul fell out of his car and started drinking again.

“When I returned home from Wales, Paul was covered in scratches and bruises from a drinking binge.

“We’re currently working together to get the help he needs to get better, which is our number one priority right now.”

Three days earlier, Paul had shared a photo of himself looking tired with vomit on his T-shirt.

Paul’s drunk driving incident happened in October.

The 50-year-old was stopped by police after being seen “walking from side to side” – and then backing into their car.

He initially denied the charges but later admitted his guilt at Brighton Magistrates Court.

He was disqualified from driving and was released on unconditional bail for sentencing this month.

But he was warned that he might end up in jail for the incident that happened three miles from the £2.7 million shared with Alan.

District Judge Amanda Kelly told him: “The starting point for this charge is a 12-week prison sentence and that’s for someone who has less alcohol and doesn’t hit a police car.

“I will ask for a pre-sentence report but you will most likely end up in jail. You endanger the public by driving in that condition.

“It is an absolute miracle that you are here to this day and have not killed or killed another member of the public. You are currently ineligible to drive as of today.

“Be as honest and open with probation as you can, but potentially incarceration.”
