I couldn’t hold back the tears or the panic when I saw my electric bill was almost €10,000 – now I’m facing the loss of my home

Adele Hunter, 30, who lives in a three-bedroom house in Rochfortbridge Co Westmeath, had switched energy suppliers last month when bills became prohibitive.

The mother-of-three forged Prepay Power, whose bills were roughly €150 a week, for SSE Airtricity, which promised €355 for five weeks.

However, Adele’s concerns went through the roof when her first SSE Airtricity bill arrived for the period 8 December 2022 to 18 January 2023 and the amount turned up was €9,179.05.

She told the Irish Sun: “This bill was my first bill which is an estimated bill for two months. It’s an absolute joke.

“I’m fed up with the cost of living (crisis). Nobody survives, it’s a shame.

“I’m not scared too much…so I almost lost my life opening this.

“I cried all evening because I knew this must be wrong, but I still couldn’t hold back the tears or panic.”

Adele claims she followed the energy company for two days and called them for an explanation of the massive bill but received no response.

She said: “Whether it’s right or wrong, how dare they scare someone like that.”

She called on the government to take further action to help Irish families weather the cost of living crisis.

Adele is now also facing the loss of the house she rents and lives in with her three children because her landlord decided to sell the property.

She said: “I have nowhere to go and the Council has done nothing for me.

“My daughter is in her Junior Cert year so I will definitely be working around her and her exams.

“It’s hard to protect all of us. It’s the biggest challenge I’ve ever faced alone, but I can do it.”

SSE Airtricity has been contacted for comment.

NATIONWIDE PROTESTS

A series of protests took place across Ireland in November drawing attention to the cost of living crisis.

Around 20 regional demonstrations took place under the umbrella of the Cost of Living Coalition.

The group, made up of 30 organizations including trade unionists, student and pensioners’ organizations and opposition political parties, is calling on the government to take radical action to tackle Ireland’s inflation and property crises.

People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy, who helped organize the protest in Tallaght, south Dublin, said the momentum behind the campaign was growing.

He said: “The momentum will continue to build because I think when winter comes there will be real pressure on people and they will see that not enough has been done to protect people.

“It’s going to be cold. People have to heat up and then they realize how much gas prices, oil prices, everything has gone up.”

He added: “People are in real crisis situations. There are a lot of people, especially older people, people on a fixed income who just can’t afford to heat their homes this winter.”
