“I don’t live under a rock and I’m aware of the pressures people and businesses are under.”

In recent weeks the opinion pages of this newspaper have featured a flurry of warnings and doomsday predictions about Ireland’s energy security and supply. I could use this space to revisit those claims, but that would be a missed opportunity. Instead, it makes much more sense to set out clearly what Ireland’s energy strategy and direction actually is and how that strategy is inextricably linked to our environmental and climate ambitions and our sustainable economic development.

It cannot be denied that we face great challenges. I would agree with one of the authors from last week that this challenge is comparable to the 1970’s when the world was held for ransom by Opec oil producing countries. The comparison is also apt because it is a fossil fuel crisis, as it was in the 1970s.
