“I expect the best performance of my career” – Katie Taylor confident before the Serrano showdown

Katie Taylor has promised the best performance of her career, befitting the occasion, when she makes boxing history at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.

Aylor, 35, the undisputed world lightweight champion, will put all her belts on the line against Puerto Rico’s seven-weight champion Amanda Serrano.

It will be the first time women boxers have topped the list at the New York venue and Taylor said: “This has been called the greatest fight in women’s boxing history and since it was announced you can feel the excitement surrounding this fight .

“The training camp is going great, I’m feeling fit, I’m feeling strong and I expect to be back on the 30th.

“I think I was born for fights like this and while it’s a big responsibility it’s an absolute privilege to be a part of such a big event and I can’t wait.”

When London 2012 gold medalist Taylor defeated Belgium’s Delfine Persoon in 2019, she became only the eighth boxer of the four-belt era, male or female, to win all world titles – WBA, WBC, WBO and IBF – simultaneously.

Serrano, 33, the unified featherweight champion, has held nine world titles in seven different weight classes and won 42 of her 44 pro fights by a draw and a loss.

Taylor dominated her weight class as an amateur, winning five straight gold medals at the world championships and has an unblemished 20-0 record since turning pro in 2016.

The Irishwoman said: “I just want to be the best boxer in the world. This is the kind of challenge I’ve always wanted and this fight will determine who is the best pound for pound fighter.

“I want to be that person and will do anything to win that fight.”

According to records, Serrano appears to be the bigger puncher, having KO’ed 30 of her opponents while Taylor stopped six.

“I think she’s known as a big puncher,” Taylor said. “But I wouldn’t worry about that. I have a good chin.

“I’m definitely preparing for the toughest fight of my career, but it will also be the toughest fight of her career.

“It’s one of the reasons – a 50/50 fight, the biggest fight in sport right now – there’s so much excitement about it.

“But my will to win, my desire, my heart, my courage will see me through.”

Hugely popular in Ireland, Taylor takes inspiration from her army of fans who will be cheering her on ringside.

She added: “I think every single Irish person I know right now actually comes over to the fight.

“I think the stadium will be packed with Irish people and the support will be amazing.

“The whole stadium will be covered in Irish flags and for me that just adds to the excitement, the scale.

“The support I’ve had from everyone at home since my amateur days has been incredible.

“The fact that they’re all coming for this fight as well is amazing. This is going to be a very special night.”
