“I Felt Washed Up” – Pippa O’Connor on Modeling After Having Children

Pippa O’Connor has spoken candidly about how becoming a mother has impacted her modeling career.

The businesswoman and social media personality said she felt “washed down” after the birth of her first child as the phone started ringing less and less.

O’Connor, who has three children, Ollie, 9, Louis, 6, and Billy, who is 11 months old, with her husband Brian Ormond, said she was written off as “just a model” early in her career.

“When I started I literally had no other job, and when I quit modeling and had my first child, I was only 28 or 29 at the time and I got a lot of questions, ‘What are you going to do now?’ ‘ she told Angela Scanlon’s Ask Me Anything.

“I’ve had so many people say, ‘You’re going to be a mom, you can’t be a model,’ it freaked me out a bit, so it was a real sink or swim case.

“It started before I had Ollie, I would have worked a lot back in the days of the Celtic Tigers and then I got pregnant and it went from twice every two weeks to once a month when the phone rang and then maybe nothing for a few months and I started to panic.

“I felt like I was done and I wasn’t even 30 and I hated this idea of having to rely on someone else to call me to work and I hated not having a sense of security. “

O’Connor then founded her successful jeans brand, Poco, which has continued to expand ever since, and published her first book, Simple Tips to Live Beautifully, in 2016.

The fashion mogul said she’s always enjoyed working with family as she works alongside her husband and sister.

“Well, I just got my teeth into starting my own brand and since that day I’ve said that’s exactly what I’m going to do. I think sometimes when you have nothing to lose you just give it a try,” she said.

“Even now I play my cards close to my chest and I’ve learned over the years not to get too excited about things where before I would have been very green and innocent.

“I’m glad it’s a family business, my sister works in the shop so it’s in the family, but I like that because you can count on your family and they have my back.”
