A man gave his cousin a £5 scratch card for Christmas – and he ended up winning a staggering £36,000.
He gave his family member a ‘stocking stuffed’ scratch-off card over the holidays – but now his wife has demanded they get every penny back after a ‘lucky’ win.
The unnamed man from the US posted the challenge on Reddit – saying his 23-year-old cousin was stolen when he won the minimum jackpot of £36,000 ($50,000.)
But now his wife has demanded that they take back the “life-changing” scratch card from his lucky cousin.
Talking about the winnings, the man wrote on Reddit: “I hugged him and said Merry Christmas, you lucky a hole**.
“He was screaming and his mother was literally in tears and the whole audience was excited. It was literally one of the ten best experiences of my life.”
However, the man then received a text from his wife, simply “getting out of the car”.
He said: “She told me there was no way we’d give my cousin $50k, then started snapping at me about buying a lottery ticket to begin with.”

The man who posted about the dilemma, believed to be in his forties, said that he and his wife were financially comfortable.
But for the 23-year-old, hitting the jackpot would be “life-changing” as he graduated from college.
On reflection, he said the money “couldn’t be transferred to a better member of my family.”
But winning the prize has caused friction between him and his wife, who has “barely talked” to him since he was 23 when he hit the jackpot.
The man continued: “His mother is single and is one of those independent women who staunchly rejects charity.
“She took a part-time job to help him pay for his studies. He worked at least two jobs on his own while attending school full-time and still manages the dean’s roster.
“But he still has debt. He already has a job, but he doesn’t have enough money to buy a car or live close to the office, so he’s looking for a nearly two-hour commute to work. .
“He’s also saving up to buy an engagement ring for his sweet girlfriend of three years.
“This money is going to really change this kid’s life and honestly, I don’t think it could have gone to a better member of my family.”
Despite explaining that they only gave the cousin a £5 ticket, the wife “didn’t buy it, and she wouldn’t let it go.”
The man added: “She’s now asking me to go back there and get the ticket back from him, saying maybe we’ll give him a part.
“We argued a bit, I couldn’t explain why she wanted the money so badly other than ‘it’s ours and you don’t give it away’.
After reading the dilemma, the Reddit user jumped in to make the man feel better about his decision – adding that the wife could not claim the ticket back.
One person said: “You don’t get gifts back when you realize they’re worth more than you thought.”
