mom jeans. mom dances Mom’s hair. None of these are really compliments, and they’re almost never—unless you count the resurgence of “normcore” in fashion, which I don’t—meant as cool.

It’s weird how “mama” became a pejorative prefix, spreading all sorts of reductive and derogatory stereotypes about motherhood. Because of those terms, not to mention a stodgy diet of pop culture Irish mum tropes, I’ve long had a preconception about what mothers were or weren’t. Before I became one, I found them embarrassing. Happiness. Slightly out of step. naff. never cool Irish mammies, in particular, have been portrayed as a particularly narrow-minded breed of pet; the rulers of their tiny domains. They’re absolute foes for good drying days, a nice Lourdes tea towel and the dip that’s out – all well-worn clichés, but I suppose they exist for a reason.
