One of my favorite things to do with releasing a FromSoftware game is the discovery process. As veterans and newcomers alike get their hands on the game, together as a community we uncover everything from the most obvious clues to the unimaginable quirks.
This also applies to the dense history of the games, like our own interpretations of what is actually going on in these worlds take shape. elden ring continues this trend. And thanks to its sheer size compared to previous FromSoft games, it hides a wealth of information for saga fans to rejoice in – I just wish those damn names weren’t so confusing!
The key characters in the world of Elden Ring, both past and present, all have names beginning with G, R, or M. I always thought that was a bit strange until I was pointed out that the author is George RR Martin’s initials. Martin, of course, created much of the Elden Ring’s backstory before handing it over to Hidetaka Miyazaki and the team at FromSoft to build the game’s world around.
Then everything made sense!
What kind of idiot would make it so on purpose that the names of the demigods who created them spell their initials? I wish I could blame localization for this, but a native English speaker came up with this!
And sure, if you’re the acclaimed author behind one of fantasy’s most iconic creations, you deserve a little ego trip. But the fact that everyone – including Miyazaki presumably – is caught up in this cruel joke makes it all the more disturbing.
It wasn’t even something that Bandai Namco and co. revealed ahead of release as a sort of “ha ha, isn’t that funny?” – we only realized that after playing.
It took me a while to figure out why it was so hard to keep track of the main characters in Elden Ring. One of them even has the audacity to change names from something that starts with an M to a similar name that… starts with an M too.
Here are some of those names, in no particular order or family relationship.
Who was murdered and restarted the events of the game? Was Godwyn the First Elden Lord? Or was that Godfrey? Is the decisive mother called Rennala or Ranni? Which of the first boss names is actually the real one, Margit or Morgott? What is the name of the demigod gone mad in the Caelid Desert, Radagon or Radahn? Good luck trying to make these connections in your head quickly without stumbling.
I’m just grateful that this doesn’t apply to place names in Elden Ring as well, because even Miyazaki isn’t that cruel.
