Former President Mary McAleese has condemned the actions of Russian President Putin for his country’s act of invading Ukraine.
McAleese also revealed that she has written to the Russian Ambassador to Ireland, Yuriy Filatov, three times since the war began on 24 February.
Speaking on the Late Late Show with Mary Robinson, the two former presidents spoke out about violent attacks on civilians across Ukraine.
“I have written to him three times already, on the condition that I cannot publish. I am very angry about this, and like everyone, I am angry but I will let you know what I find difficult to deal with,” Ms. McAleese said.
“I have never been one to look down on others. I don’t remember ever being looked down upon, but I certainly am now. About that man, about what he stands for, and how he lied to us. “
Ms McAleese said the only irony was Mr Filatov telling a Russian TV channel that Ireland was “hostile” to the country.
Last week, Mr. Filatov listed a series of complaints against the treatment of Russians in Ireland on Russia-24, the state-owned Russian-language news channel, in an unusual interview.
“And the only good thing, if there is anything good that can be said here, we know that he went on Russian television and said that the Irish people are hostile to Russia and that they have treated Russia very badly. him and his colleagues,” she said.
“Now I’m sure that’s a story Putin wouldn’t want to be told, about which side our small country like Ireland has taken.
“Especially in the so-called ‘neutral’ country, so I’m really grateful that in an ironic and ironic way he delivered a message to the Russian people that through the press their own fake and their own fake. news, but he really brings a truth about us as a people. “
Ms. McAleese said Mrs. Putin has brought Russia into “national status right around the world”.
“Yes, we took a side here. And we will continue to be on that side until the Russian people realize that hopefully they will have it within their power, some days these days, to neutralize the militarist, the model this horrible, anti-humanitarian who got their country right around the world,” she said.
She also revealed that she had applied to accommodate a Ukrainian family fleeing conflict, she said: “God, we’ll get them in. We signed up and hoped. we’ll be able to.”
