I owe £176 after being fined for parking while picking up my wife’s medicine

A CRISIS motorist is left with £176 in debt after he was fined for parking while going to get his wife’s medicine.

Allan Heslop, 85, was told to park his £30 car in Prestwick, Ayrshire, after he pulled into a disabled car park outside a chemist.

Allan’s wife, Christine, 78 – who has a disability – remained inside their Kia Venga while her husband rushed inside to get a prescription.

When Allan returned to his car 15 minutes later, he was shocked to find that a parking manager had given him a ticket.

The warden assumed it was because Christine’s disabled badge was out of date.

Allan appealed the parking ticket – which was issued in September 2020 – later that day, but his attempt was rejected by the Ayrshire Roads Union.

After refusing to pay the out-of-principle charge, the total amount owed by Allan skyrocketed to £176.

Allan said: “The management of the Ayrshire Roads Alliance should be exposed.

“You would think they would use some common sense.

“We are both in our 70s and 80s and are in the vulnerable category, and we are always told not to do anything unnecessary when exposing ourselves to the virus.

“But no one wants to know.

“My wife’s blue badge has expired and I can’t enter any council offices as they are all closed due to the pandemic.

“I decided to park in the handicap bay because there was nowhere else to park on Main Street.

“I left my wife in the car because the government message was
at home. I don’t want to put her at risk.

“The parking attendant is rude, abrupt and impolite.

“My wife was in tears.”

Kevin Braidwood of Ayrshire Roads Alliance explains that Blue Badge holders must follow a number of rules.

He emphasized: “One of the regulations is that the car keeper must not let people without disabilities take advantage of parking benefits when they are in the car.

“In this case a £30 fine was issued and despite numerous reminders, the fine remained unpaid.

“The debt is now in the hands of the Sheriffs.”
