A woman who paid for surgery on her dog has faced criticism from her family for not paying for her mother’s surgery.
The woman who was on Reddit’s popular show Am I The Asshole? to ask someone else’s opinion on the situation, begin by explaining that her parents “believe parenting ends when the child turns 18”.
She added: “By the time I was 18, I was obligated to pay the rent and for all the other expenses related to my survival if you will.”
Since moving out and into college, she and her parents have been in “monthly contact but nothing deep or below the surface”.
However, her mother recently needed surgery to remove the tumor, and despite having good health insurance, she and the woman’s father still incur significant costs associated with the surgery.
“My dad called me and told me they needed help with money, the whole ‘she’s your mom and will do the same for you’ talk,” she continued.
“I really wanted to help but told him I didn’t have the money available, only in my savings so in the end I didn’t contribute and they got a loan that I trusted.”
The woman’s dog then had to have surgery to remove the object she had swallowed.
She explained: “It happened so quickly that I had to use a large part of my savings to pay for it.
When her father found out, he called her “terrible names” and “saying that I would rather my mother die/be in debt and put an animal life on hold than my mother”.
“I disagreed and have ignored his calls since then, but other family members are texting me because they think I don’t care if my mom lives or dies.” she concluded.
The majority of people in the comments section agreed that the woman was not at fault for not paying for her mother’s surgery and then paying for her dog’s surgery.
“Your dog is your dependent. Your parents are not,” one person wrote.
While another added: “You promised to take care of your pet. Your parents made the same promise when they decided to be a parent but then they refused.
“You’re not obligated to pay for the surgery of someone who doesn’t even care enough about you to ensure that you’ll successfully transition into adulthood.”
“You chose to be in charge of that dog which means doing everything in your power to keep it healthy,” another commented.
“Plus, your parents can borrow and get money in other ways. Your dog just has you.”
In response, this woman took to the comments section again, writing: Thanks for all the feedback and helping me feel a little better about the situation.
“My dog is recovering well and I will take this post down. Thank you!”
