It’s been a long time when budget phones were stinking – and Apple proves it.
I’ve been using Apple’s sleek new iPhone SE for just under a week, and it’s clear that smartphone greatness doesn’t need to break the bank.
For the uninitiated, Apple sells a “cheaper” smartphone called the iPhone SE.
The first one came out in 2016, followed by the upgrade iPhone SE 2 model in 2020.
Now, 2022 offers the iPhone SE 3 – best ever and very attractive given its $429 / £419 price tag.
From the outside, it looks like an iPhone 8.
It’s a tried-and-tested interface, combining the “notch” and Face ID for the iconic Touch ID fingerprint scanner Home button and larger bezel.
No complaints: I like the more modern look of the iPhone 13, but the iPhone 8 looks fine.
Perhaps the main drawback of the design is that it limits the device to a screen size of 4.7 inches.
For context, the iPhone 13’s display ranges from 5.8 inches to 6.7 inches.
The iPhone SE’s display isn’t for me – but some people will like the reduced screen size, and that’s okay.
It’s also pretty sharp at 326 pixels per inch, with the wide P3 color gamut meaning images are accurately represented on the screen.
There are really two main changes that you need to know about for the iPhone SE in 2022.
The first is support for speed 5G mobile Internet.
Now, Apple is pushing 5G down the list, giving budget-conscious buyers the chance to enjoy super-fast mobile speeds.
Currently, a good 5G connection can accommodate download speeds 10 times the download speed of 4G signals.
What does that mean in real terms? Apps download faster, large WhatsApp files load faster, and videos stream more smoothly.
Of course, 5G cannot exist on Iphone support alone.
You’ll also need to buy a 5G-enabled SIM card (your 4G SIM probably already supports this, remember) and use your phone where a 5G signal is available.
5G networks are rapidly spreading across the US and UK. But they’re not everywhere, and won’t last for a long time.
Indeed, the iPhone SE’s switch to 5G is inevitable.
And with a flurry of 5G deals available (and more to come), Apple’s sleek cell will land at the perfect time.
The second big change is processing power.
Apple has (quite generously) put the A15 Bionic chip inside the new iPhone SE.
I say generous because it’s the same chip that supplies power iPhone 13 Pro – cost more than double SE.
It’s an incredibly fast processor which means the new iPhone SE really flies. It’s remarkable for the price and outperforms anything you’ll find on Android for a similar price.
The phone is smooth to use, whether you’re streaming video, playing games, editing photos, or anything else you might be doing.
Both 5G and A15 are high-end features that are now available on a mid-range phone. Acclaim.
It should also be noted that battery life has increased for this new model.
By most Apple metrics, you’ll get two more hours of use per charge compared to the old model.
On the other hand, the phone is largely good for the price.
Apple’s camera combines a good lens and sensor with powerful computational photography to make your shots look surprisingly good.
It’s a 12-megapixel wide camera with Portrait Mode, Deep Combing (for detailed snapshots), and 4K video recording at up to 60fps.
You get three storage options: 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. Something for everyone.
There are also three color options: Starlight, Midnight (which I’ve tried and loved), and Product Red.
And the iPhone, of course, runs on Apple’s iOS, a great casual operating system that offers a wide selection of apps, games, and features.
The iPhone SE is a huge hit for your money ($429 / £419).
And it builds significantly on top of the iPhone SE 2, future-proofing it (whatever it is) without dramatically increasing costs.
This is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to get 5G in 2022. It’s much cheaper than the iPhone 13 and less than half the price of the supercharged iPhone 13 Pro.
I’d love to see a full-screen display soon, but it’s by no means a deal breaker here.
I’m really surprised by the strong price tag of this phone. Truly a master of optimization and drip technology.
The Sun says: Apple has crammed premium features into a classic iPhone body, keeping prices low and performance high. If you can look past the old design, the iPhone SE 2022 is one of the biggest steals in smartphones today. 5/5
