‘I showed the heart of the champion’ – Katie Taylor says winning in New York was the ‘best moment’ of her career

KATIE Taylor has described her sensational win over Amanda Serrano at Madison Square Garden as the best night of her career.

In the sixth defense of her undisputed world lightweight title, Taylor staged a Lazarus-like comeback in the second half of an amazing contest to earn the first split decision of her pro career. Her winning streak now stretches to 21 wins.

“It was definitely the best night of my career. I wasn’t sure if anything could match my Olympic gold medal moment.

“But tonight was the absolute best moment of my career,” said Taylor, still bleeding from a head wound, at the post-fight press conference in MSG.

Taylor suffered the biggest hit of her career in the fifth round but somehow managed to stay put. One of three ringside judges, Guida Cavallen, scored the round 10-8 in Serrano’s favor, despite giving the fight to Taylor overall (96-93).

But the Bray pugilist showed incredible courage to come back and dominate the final three rounds

“I think that’s what my corner said, I needed the championship rounds. I did what I had to do.

“I showed the heart of the champion as I always do. I think I keep showing the heart of this champion when I need it too.

“I also dug deep when I needed to. Tonight I was in the trenches again. These are definitely career-defining moments.

“I think the most important thing is to come out on top, whether I played well or not. Tonight was just fantastic. I had to dig deep tonight. I had to put on a career-defining performance to actually win.

“What a great champion Amanda is. A phenomenal fighter and we definitely brought out the best in each other.

“Everyone was talking before this fight that it was the greatest women’s fight in boxing history, but I think it accomplished everything that people were talking about this week.

“I just go to the ring and see a full stadium. It was amazing. It was an absolutely special, special moment,” said Taylor.

Immediately after the fight there was a verbal agreement between the two camps in the ring that there would be a rematch, with Croke Park emerging as a possible venue.
