I think Facebook is LISTENING to my conversations, stunned TikToker claims after discovering ‘strange’ coincidence

A MAN from Birmingham has questioned whether Facebook could be eavesdropping on his conversations after noticing a “strange” coincidence.

TikToker TJ Mills said he was talking to his partner about VR arcades and that there aren’t any nearby.

But the next day, while scrolling through Facebook, his other half noticed an ad for a VR arcade in Birmingham, where they live.

“Is Facebook listening?” he asked followers on TikTok.

“Is Facebook listening to our conversations?

“Or is it just me? No, that’s weird.

It’s not the first time Facebook has been accused of snooping on people’s conversations.

Last year, we heard an American coffee shop owner discover oat milk adverts after talking about the dairy alternative.

But it’s actually nothing more than an urban myth.

For years there has been speculation as to whether companies like Facebook are spying on people chatting.

There has never been any solid evidence — hearsay and anecdote aside — that the social media giant is recording conversations.

Can Facebook eavesdrop on your conversations?

Facebook has repeatedly denied the claims, stressing that it bases the ads you see on your interests and information from your profile.

Multiple independent investigations have found no evidence that the US tech titan is secretly listening to its users.

Experts say that while Facebook hoards a lot of data, it’s extremely unlikely that the company is secretly tracking hundreds of millions of people.

The key point is that Facebook doesn’t have to.

It knows enough about you from your browsing data and profile information to target you with very specific ads.

In the case of TJ Mills, it’s very likely that his and his partner’s apps have figured out what interests them based on their internet searches and other online browsing.

Facebook is able to get a pretty detailed picture of what makes us tick, so here the algorithm cleverly targeted them with an ad in nearby VR arcades.

Like many of Facebook’s claims of hijacking phone microphones, the ads’ appearance was purely circumstantial.
