Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has urged Mikel Arteta to stop complaining and focus on his own team after the Arsenal boss criticized the referee after last night’s 3-0 defeat that reduced his lead team down to just one point in the race for the top four.
rteta was furious after referee Paul Tierney pointed to the point in the 22nd minute – which Harry Kane converted – and eleven minutes later showed a second yellow for Rob Holding for a foul on Son Heung-min.
“If I say what I think, I’ll be banned for six months,” Arteta said. “I don’t know how to lie so I’d rather not say what I think…it’s a shame because such a beautiful game was destroyed today.”
Conte, whose team clinched victory after a Kane double and a Son goal, was unhappy with Arteta’s assessment of the referee.
“Mikel Arteta is a really good coach. He’s just started doing this job and I think I hear him complain a lot. I think he needs to focus more on his team and not complain,” he said.
“The red card was clear to me. Don’t forget that I didn’t say anything against Liverpool about what happened to Fabinho.”
The Italian hinted it was unfair that Arsenal were able to rearrange the original game due to Covid-19 despite the squad only having positive cases.
“Arsenal were good at postponing a game with Covid in an incredible way and they only had one player with Covid. I haven’t forgotten that. If he wants to complain, we have many ways to complain,” said Conte.
Fourth-placed Arsenal, who lead Spurs by a point with two games to go, travel to Newcastle United on Monday while Conte’s side host Burnley a day earlier.
