I thought I just had a sore throat from a cold

A TIKTOKER has encouraged everyone to get regular screening for STIs after being diagnosed with a life-changing condition.

They went to a doctor after suffering from a sore throat and were told it was strep.

The TikToker said they were diagnosed with a sore throat and given antibiotics

Strep throat is a bacterial infection that causes your throat to feel itchy and sore.

It usually comes on quickly and may involve a fever, but in this case it was misdiagnosed.

The TikTokers, known as “saintkyle13,” shared their journey to raise awareness about HIV testing.

They posted a video explaining how they were given antibiotics for strep throat.

But after a few weeks it came back, she’d lost 30 pounds and could “barely walk.”

The doctors ran further tests to find out what could be wrong and they were told they had HIV.

Under the video, they wrote: “Get tested regularly and ask your partners about their status. Knowledge is power!”

They added that they have now been undetectable for three and a half years and feel healthy.

There are over 100,000 people living with HIV in the UK – while an estimated 35 million people are HIV positive worldwide.

HIV, which stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, was first discovered by scientists in the early 1980s.

The virus attacks the immune system and, if left untreated, can weaken a person’s ability to fight off infection and disease.

But nowadays, thanks to modern medicine, the outcome for those who are HIV positive is very different.

Thanks to the antiretroviral treatment people are given as soon as they are diagnosed, very few people in the UK develop severe or late-stage HIV disease and can expect to live long, healthy lives.

Most people with HIV experience a brief illness, similar to the flu, two to six weeks after contracting the virus.

After that, they can usually feel good for a long time.

Most people don’t notice other symptoms of HIV until years later, as the virus progresses.

The very early signs include:

  • Fever
  • Sore throat
  • skin rash
  • fatigue
  • Joint and/or muscle pain
  • swollen glands

Only when the immune system is already severely damaged does the person show new symptoms. These include:

  • weight loss
  • Chronic diarrhea
  • night sweats
  • skin problems
  • Recurrent infections
  • Serious, life-threatening illnesses

Getting screened for HIV is quick and easy.

Blood tests can be done at a sexual health clinic, HIV testing center, or at your GP’s — or you can order a kit online.

The result of your test will not be shared with anyone unless you give your consent – including your employer, family and partner.

Quick finger tests give results in 15 minutes, while blood samples at a testing center often take a day or a week to come back.

The same applies to postal tests, which you will normally contact with your results a week later.
