“I took drugs to numb myself, not to party,” says Johnny Depp, while commenting on Amber Heard’s defamation lawsuit

Johnny Depp says his use of drugs and alcohol over the years has never been “for a party” but rather to numb himself to “the ghosts of my youth”.

The actor said his “drug abuse” was “grossly embellished” by Amber Heard and that many of her allegations were “just plain wrong”.

Mr Depp, 58, is suing the Aquaman star for defamation over a 2018 article she wrote in the Washington Post that his attorneys wrongly say physically and sexually abused her.

Much of the evidence heard so far at the US trial, taking place in Virginia, relates to his drug use while the two were together, which Ms Heard’s lawyers say has sparked violent episodes.

Testifying on Tuesday, Mr Depp said his drug use began at the age of 11 when he took his mother’s nerve pills “to get away from feeling so much”.

“[It’s]quite a young age to be doing that, I can’t say I’m proud to admit that, but I have to say I didn’t know what else to do,” he said.

“I’ve never used (the word) party in my life, I’ve never taken any substance for a party.

“I’ve taken these substances on and off over the years to numb myself from the spirits, the ghosts that have stayed with me since my youth.

“It was essentially self-medication, one of those get me out of here moments when you want to get out of your own brain, out of your own head.”

He added: “Ms. Heard’s characterization of my ‘drug abuse’ is grossly embellished and I’m sorry but much of it is just plain wrong.

“I’m not a maniac who needs to be high or charged all the time.”

Mr Depp also admitted he was “ashamed and embarrassed” by text messages he had previously sent containing insults against Ms Heard and said he went into “dark places” in the “heat of the moment”. may be.

The actor said he initially thought his relationship with Ms Heard was “too good to be true” but noticed things that “could be a bit of a dilemma at some point.”

“She was thoughtful, she was loving, she was smart, she was kind, she was funny, she was understanding and we had a lot in common,” he told the court.

“For that year or a half it was amazing, there were a few things that stuck in my mind that I realized I thought might be a bit of a dilemma at some point.”

At the beginning of his testimony, the actor said he was “obsessed with the truth” and “didn’t deserve” the “disgusting and disturbing” allegations being made against him.

“It was a total shock … it just didn’t have to go in that direction because nothing like it had ever happened,” he said.

“[In]the relationship there were arguments and things like that, but I myself never got to the point where I hit Ms. Heard in any way, nor have I ever hit a woman in my life.”

Mr Depp said at the time the allegations had “permeated” the entertainment industry and become a “quote, unquoted, fact”.

“It’s been six years of difficult times, very strange when one day you’re sort of Cinderella and then in 0.6 seconds you’re Quasimodo,” he said

“I didn’t deserve that, neither did my children and the people who believed in me over the years.

“I pride myself on honesty… on truth. Truth is the only thing I’m interested in.

“Lies get you nowhere, and lies build on lies… I’m obsessed with the truth, so today is the first opportunity that I’m able to speak fully on this case.”

The actor also opened up about the emotional and physical abuse he faced during his own childhood from his mother and father, but said it taught him valuable lessons about raising his own children.

He said it was “diabolical” that his children were being subjected to allegations against him by their peers at school.

Mr Depp, who wore a dark suit and light paisley tie and had his long hair tied back, is scheduled to testify further on Wednesday.
