I tried Amazon’s new budget Fire tablet and I can’t believe they made three big changes

LOVE or hate Amazon, they know how to make products that won’t break the bank.

Fire has been a mainstay since 2011 and has sold millions of copies worldwide.

The latest device update is coming for the Dinky Fire 7 in the 12th version which is now being released.

And as always, there are small but noticeable changes.

The first big difference we can’t do without is outside of the spec sheet… the price.

And unfortunately it is not a decline.

The device now costs £59.99 – which is up £10 compared to the last version, which isn’t too bad.

However, with everyone tightening their belts right now, a price hike isn’t ideal – in Amazon’s defense, this is still a lot cheaper than anything else out there for what you get.

How is the Fire 7 (2022) holding up?

Hard stuff, hard stuff

The look and feel of the Fire 7 hasn’t really changed.

A simple black plastic body with a huge border around the screen does not exude beauty, but it has become smaller.

It’s also thinner than before while remaining strong and durable.

There’s a denim or rose option if black isn’t your thing.

middle screen

The display is quite small at 7 inches, but what did you expect is written on the tin.

To my delight, it’s fairly bright, but don’t expect high resolution.

This is just an SD screen – given its size, it does the job of browsing apps, looking at things and reading books.

In terms of content, you can get pretty much everything you would expect on an Android tablet (remember, this is Amazon’s “Fire OS” based on Android 11).

Aside from missing some well-known apps – YouTube is one of them, at least an official app.

As before, the Fire tablets are best if you’re already a Prime subscriber, with things like Prime Video being pushed heavily.

And don’t forget that voice assistant Alexa – arguably one of the best around – is also built-in.

The good thing is that Amazon is pretty solid when it comes to providing software updates years after release, meaning you won’t be forced to buy a new one anytime soon.

One of the other big changes Amazon has made is in terms of performance.

There’s a new chip and more RAM than before, which should make things faster.

Don’t expect to fly through many apps at once.

The performance is functional for general needs, but that’s not something you’d use for big games – and there aren’t any big hitters to download anyway, not even Fortnite.

Touch and slide responsiveness is also slightly slower.

Ch-ch chargers

The final big difference from the all-new Fire 7 tablet is that it now uses a modern USB-C connector, like almost everything else these days, meaning you’ll have one less cable to pack for your next vacation.

You can charge the device from zero to 100% within around four hours, which is not fast, but is not to be scoffed at either.

The sun says: The Fire 7 is proof that you don’t have to spend money to own a tablet.

Yes, the price has gone up a bit and it’s nowhere near as fancy as an iPad – but an iPad would cost you so much more.

Fire 7 is perfect for anyone looking for a durable tablet without the thrills, even more so if you have a strong interest in Amazon’s existing products.
