IF YOU’RE the type of person who forgets to charge your stuff, you know the pain when your phone dies in the middle of the day.
You type a text or watch Netflix and suddenly your battery is empty.
And phones don’t always charge quickly either. The latest iPhone takes two hours to charge a dead battery to 100 percent.
For those of us who like things a little more nimble, there’s the OnePlus 10T – the latest smartphone from Chinese company OnePlus.
The battery charges fully in less than 20 minutes, eliminating the need to plug it into an outlet overnight.
After testing it for a couple of weeks, I had managed to break the habit of reaching for the charging cable just before nodding off.
Instead, I was able to charge it in the shower every morning.
In that 20-minute window, the phone easily picked up enough power to last until the next morning.
The OnePlus 10T’s battery is a big dual-cell number with a capacity of 4,800 mAh.
It only lasts about a day on a single charge with moderate use, which would be a slight downside without the fast top-up.
Thankfully, that mediocre battery life is backed up by 150W charging – more than five times the power of Apple’s top-of-the-line iPhone.
To get the maximum charging speed, you’ll need the company’s 160W SUPERVOOC power adapter and a USB-C cable.
Luckily, both come bundled in the 10T box, meaning you don’t need to spend any extra on them.
OnePlus says its charging technology can deliver up to “daily power” in 10 minutes and fully charge the device in just 19 minutes.
In my tests, I was able to go from 1 to 33 percent in about five minutes and from 1 to 5 percent in fifteen minutes.
A small drawback here is that not everyone can use the full charging capacity of the OnePlus 10T.
For example, if you’re in the US, most outlets don’t have the output capacity to give you the full 150W that the charger offers.
It’s amazing how much the charging speed of the OnePlus 10T has changed the way I used my device.
Gone are the days of having to limit my phone usage after forgetting to plug it in the night before.
Instead, any concern about whether or not I had enough charge vanished.
And if you take a charger with you when you leave the house, you’ll have even more freedom.
Running out of electricity in a café or pub? Just plug the phone into a nearby outlet and you’ll be up and running in ten minutes.
Fast charging is the next big thing in the smartphone world, and the OnePlus 10T really nails it.
what else is good
Even without its fast-charging capabilities, the OnePlus 10T is a solid device in its own right.
As we’ve come to expect from OnePlus devices now, the hefty 6.7-inch display is gorgeous and offers a 1080 x 2412 resolution.
It also has a 120Hz refresh rate, which is twice as fast as most other phones and allows for silky smooth scrolling and animations.
The design is great without doing anything particularly creative, although I’m not a big fan of the slightly glossy finish on the back.
The cameras are okay without doing anything fancy and are certainly a step down from the top iPhone or Samsung phones.
That shouldn’t come as a surprise, however, given the price of the 10T.
It’s just £629 ($649) and undercuts fast-charging phones like the Xaomi, which fetch in excess of £1,000.
Overall I would say that the OnePlus 10T is a great phone for people on a budget.
Fast charging alone doesn’t make it worth buying, but besides that, it offers enough to get my seal of approval.
