I tried really hard not to get mugged – people think I’m crazy, but it’s worth it

A MAN has gone to extreme lengths to avoid being mugged – and some people think he’s gone insane.

The TikTok user known as @paybyhand has spent around £200 to have a contactless chip implanted in his hand.

He can use it to pay for goods without a bank card.

In a series of clips posted to the social media site, he has documented his progress with the chip, from having the surgery to paying for the gas.

The chip was implanted by British start-up Walletmor, which will carry out the procedure for around £200 (249 euros).

It requires no anesthetic and takes around 15 minutes to be “chipped”.

Users need to install an app called iCard on their phone, where they can deposit money in different currencies from an ordinary bank account.

The app works similarly to Apple Pay, but instead of paying with your phone, the chip in your hand is paired with the app.

The chip uses Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, which is used in smartphones for contactless payments.

This means the chip doesn’t use a power source or emit radio waves, but instead creates a magnetic field around the chip that stores a small amount of data for card readers to interact with.

Some thought it might be a sign of the future.

One commenter said, “That came from Cyberpunk 2077.”

Another simply thought, “The future.”

But not everyone was convinced that the chip implant would actually make their money safer.

One commenter wrote: “Just give this guy a card machine with a £1000 fee.”

While another said: “I’ll buy a card reader and walk past you and put it under your hand.”

Another added: “All fun and awesome until the card expires”.

However, PayByHand explained that the card will expire in seven years and will need to be replaced after that.
