“I was a danger to myself” – Seán Finn on his concussion against Cork

Limerick star Seán Finn has revealed he was trying to get back on the pitch after suffering a concussion in the league defeat by Cork – but admits he would have been a ‘danger’ to himself had he been allowed .
The four-time All-Star admitted he tried to guess the answers to the questions the medical team asked him as part of their concussion protocols to get back in the fray.
Limerick pulled him off and after the incident the Bruff man was kept in the hospital overnight as a precaution.
“(It was) my first. I can understand why you wouldn’t want a number of them. It’s pretty serious,” Finn said at the launch of the John West Féile.
“I really wanted to be on the pitch at the time. I tried to find the answers to what they asked me only to get my way out of there – I think I got them all wrong! They said the best thing would be to just keep me away. I was just shocked. I didn’t train for 10 or 12 days and then I went back to training.”
Luckily Finn is now fully recovered but believes it’s a player’s instinct to try and get back in the game.
“I think it’s natural that you want to play. It’s just the competitive nature of the player, but I think it’s important that the medical team take their own initiative as well. It was only maybe 10 minutes later that I was actually showing symptoms of a real concussion, so I’m saying it was probably a delayed reaction. If I was on the pitch 10 minutes later, I was a danger to myself.
“[I had]memory loss and a really bad headache. But at that moment I got up, came off the field and tried to invent the answers. They probably didn’t realize and they probably knew I wasn’t right, but then again, it was up to them to make that decision.
“If they had said, ‘You can go ahead then go ahead, Seán,’ then I would have gone on, but that wasn’t the right thing to do, but it was good that I wasn’t able to make that decision.
“It was important that they use their initiative, even though it could be difficult to make a decision.”
