I was fined £160 for using the GP’s car park whilst having a breast exam…women don’t need that

A WOMAN has told of her shock after being slapped with a £160 fine for using a GP’s car park while attending a breast exam.

Lou Wilkinson received the bill after walking to a mobile mammography unit in the Garth Surgery car park in Guisborough.

When she received the letter from G24 Limited, she had “absolutely no idea” what it was about.

But after posting about the fine on social media, she realized she wasn’t the only person to have received a letter from the company.

Lou said: “I received a letter for a final payment request for £160 for a parking fee on January 10th.

“I had absolutely no idea where that came from or what it was for. I called the company and they said it was from the Guisborough Medical Center car park. I was told I had previous memories and said I had nothing at all.

“‘I was in the lot with the mobile cart for a mammogram and there has to be a camera to catch you going in and out.

“I filed a ‘complaint against your charges’ – she came back and said this had been dropped. She said there was an error on the part of G24.”

On Facebook, a post about the fines received over 200 comments.

Lou said she didn’t even know at first if it was a real fine: “I thought it was fraud at first.

“Then I realized and I was reading all these things on Facebook. I think the practice has been inundated with people ringing what they don’t need to do at the moment. The health center is not to blame.

“It seems like there are hundreds and hundreds of people in Stokesley and Great Ayton who have received these £160 fines without warning for mammograms.”

Lou said how the fines put unnecessary pressure on those who go to the mobile unit for screenings.

She said: “A lot of people will rely on the fear factor. They’re like, ‘Oh my god, I’ve got a collection agency asking me I’ll pay for this.’ I don’t know how many have done that.

“Even if it’s routine, you always think, I hope everything is alright. Women who leave because they are being screened for breast cancer really don’t need to.”

The Sun has reached out to G24 Limited for comment.
