I was fined for driving in the bus lane but the road is only marked as ‘gate’

A DRIVE has hit the council for “totally unfair” after he was fined for driving through a “bus gate”.

He said there weren’t any clear signs and that any motorist unfamiliar with the area wouldn’t know what to do.

The frustrated driver posted on Facebook: “I know I’ve whined about this before but this is my 2nd ‘Bus Gate’ ticket and I really think it’s completely unfair and a scam. absolute monetization scam for the council.”

“With the driver telling me to keep going straight, with the car ahead going straight, no clear red bus lanes, no white lines to cross, and another colored paving on the left – obviously what I should have done here is notice the tiny sign and know what “Bus Gate” means (even though it’s not in the Highway Code) and I should have turned left to what looks like sidewalk?”

According to Brighton & Hove City Council, a bus gate is a short passage that only buses and authorized vehicles can pass through.

Only buses, bicycles, hire cars, taxis and emergency vehicles that are free of charge can enter through the bus gate.

Any other vehicle entering the bus gate will be subject to a £60 fine, reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days.

Unlike bus lanes, bus gates are not included in the Highway Code.

The driver continued: “I really don’t understand how they would expect any normal driver who doesn’t know the area and goes on the left side there?

“It’s an absolute scam and Brighton & Hove City Council should be ashamed of itself.”

Many people expressed their support in the comments section, with one person saying “What the hell is a bus gate? Also, if you haven’t driven past a solid white line it never will. out.”

“Still don’t know what you actually did wrong here,” another wrote.

The third said: “I drove there for the first time in my van. Agreed, Signage is c**p.”

It was previously reported that Brighton & Hove city council issued 9,618 bus gate fines last October – an average of 310 a day.

ONE petition calling on the board to revoke and refund the bus gate fines received nearly 1000 signatures. It also says the council should stop issuing new fines until the signage is clearer.

A council spokesman said: “City bus lanes are important for a number of reasons. They are clearly marked and there are many signs in accordance with the requirements of the Department of Transport. However, we have recently agreed to put up more signs.

“Most UK cities have bus lanes. They ensure efficient public transport, make the city safer for pedestrians, and help reduce the number of cars in the city by making buses a good commuting option. We contacted sat nav companies to ask them to program bus gates into their routes.

“Most of the money from the fine is used to provide free bus passes for seniors and people with disabilities.”
