“If I hadn’t checked I would have come out and my car would have been gone. That’s pretty scary. I guess they were just trying their luck.”

She said: “I tried to lock my car but nothing happened. I opened and closed all my doors again, but nothing worked.

“I realized they must have done something to jam the signal. I got back in the car and looked at them in the side mirror and they looked away from me.

“I moved my car and it was immediately locked. I called the Trafford Center yesterday and they said this was not the first time this had been reported.”

She added: “I didn’t manage to get the car registered myself. I was so worried that I just wanted to get away from them. There weren’t many other people around.

“My car is just a Nissan Juke. There was plenty of parking nearby and didn’t really need them to pull up right behind me. I believe her car was a black VW.

What is Jamming of Car Keys?

Car key jammers are small transmitters that can interrupt key fob signals, ruining their ability to lock a car.

Thieves can jam your key signal without you noticing, waiting to steal your unlocked car.

Even relatively underpowered devices, which can easily be bought online, can have a range of up to 75m and smother an entire parking lot.

How can you keep your car safe?

Always check if your car is manually locked by trying a door handle after using your key fob. Be aware that if your car is left unlocked, thieves could be operating nearby.

Alternatively, a more prominent security measure is a car jam detector, which will set off an alarm if a blocking signal is detected.

Additional precautions include steering wheel locks, shifter locks and trackers fitted to your car.

Do insurance companies cover this type of theft?

Most insurance companies don’t pay if a car is left unlocked – and there’s no proof you didn’t just forget to lock your car.

Unless a thief is caught in the act, your insurance company is unlikely to believe your car lock has been jammed.
