‘I will side with Russia’: Pro-Putin sentiment goes viral online

On a podcast on Wednesday, Stephen K. Bannon, a former Trump adviser, also praised Putin as an “awake-proof man.” He said the Ukraine conflict “is not our war.”

After the Russian attack began, some online users interpreted Mr. Putin’s motives by mixing them with conspiracy theories about Covid-19. A Twitter account called War Clandestine claims that Putin is targeting bio-food restaurants in Ukraine run by the United States. The author said that this idea is more credible because of the conspiracy theory that the US made Covid-19 in a laboratory in Wuhan, China.

Pro-America influencers like Mikel Crump and John Basham, who have a combined 99,200 followers, amplified the topic. Twitter later suspended the War Clandestine account, plus a second account by the same user for trying to evade the ban, but people continued to post screenshots of the topic online.

Twitter says users’ accounts have been permanently suspended for violating its abuse policy, and that it is monitoring emerging narratives that violate its rules. Mr Crump and Mr Basham did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Some pro-Russian commentators claim they were right. Many blame Mr. Biden, rekindling old conspiracy theories about his son Hunter and Hunter’s work at a Ukrainian gas company when Mr. Biden was vice president and engaged in diplomatic efforts with the country. There is no evidence of wrongdoing by the Bidens, but conservatives have grasped the narrative during the 2020 election.

When reached for comment, Mr. Oltmann, a conservative podcaster, said, “You really don’t know anything about Ukraine. People support Russia because you didn’t do the right thing when it came to Biden’s fraud and corruption. I pray for the people of Ukraine but also pray that those who facilitated the evil communist agenda in America are held accountable.”

In an email, Ms. Owens, the conservative talk show host, also said the Russia-Ukraine war was Biden’s fault. “Ukrainians are dying because of the Biden family’s criminal connections and their insistence on causing conflict in the region,” she said.
