A LOTTERY winner has revealed that he has no plans to split any of his winnings among his family, despite the fact that they are struggling with debt.
Taken to Reddit, the winner recently claimed he’d hit a jackpot of more than £4m but after announcing his family-sharing plans ‘cut him off’.
He explained that he and his wife, both 24, buy lottery tickets from time to time for ‘entertainment’.
“Wow, we won big this month,” he wrote. After one-time fees and taxes, we won about $5.6 million.
“After paying off all our debts (student loans, home mortgages, car loans), we have about 5 million left. In case you didn’t know, 70% of lottery winners go bankrupt after a few years.”
Not wanting to meet the same fate, the man and his wife decided to invest their three million winnings and the remaining two million dollars to buy an apartment, something that did not go well for his family.
He continued: “When I told my family, I thought the first reaction would get me excited and how we were financially responsible with that money.
“But that starts with a big family trip, how I repay them, and more.
“I explained that 5 million is a lot but not enough I will give it to my family and they took it.
“They say I’m not welcome in this family and I shouldn’t talk to them anymore.”
The post sparked mixed reactions from fellow Redditors, and many actually agreed with the winner.
Commenting, one person wrote: “Are you no longer welcome in your family because you didn’t give them your money? The benefit is nausea. ”
Agreeing, a second added: “Your family has shown you that blood is not thicker than money.”
Another wrote: “I’m someone who will definitely give a lot to my family, but there’s nothing wrong with securing your future with it.”
