Ice cream van makes money as motorists are trapped on the M62 during a searing heatwave

Frustrated motorists stuck in standstill traffic on the M62 were still able to enjoy the hot weather after a quick-witted ice cream truck driver smashed into a traffic jam

A quick-thinking ice cream truck driver brought relief to motorists stuck on the M62 by selling 99s and lollipops during a traffic jam.

A seven-mile traffic jam became an unlikely business opportunity for the business owner, although it’s not clear if they sent the van onto the freeway on purpose or if it was already caught in traffic when the driver decided to cash in on the captive audience.

Enthusiastic drivers took to social media to share images of their cooling refreshments in the hot weather, with some showing large numbers of customers exiting their vehicles to queue for ice cream.

A group of customers can be seen waiting to get their 99′ and a few more people further up the freeway stretching their legs after traffic has been brought to a complete standstill.

A picture was posted by Krissiy Sutcliffe with the caption: “Only in Yorkshire…7 miles congestion on the M62 so what are you doing?” Sell ​​your ice cream on a hot day.

“Could only happen in Yorkshire, that’s why we love Yorkshire.”

The Daily Star reports that traffic on the eastbound M62 had come to a standstill on Sunday 19 June following an accident.

At 12.10pm drivers were reporting congestion on the motorway between junction 26 for the M606 at Chain Bar and junction 25 at Brighouse. At 12:34 the drivers stopped.

The incident caused some drivers to open their car doors to cool off as temperatures soared to 23C.

Several jealous social media users said they wished they’d seen an ice cream truck while stuck in freeway traffic.

John Cheshire wrote: “I’ve gotten stuck here many times, the M62 is the Lancashire to Yorkshire motorway (and intense driving). I never had the luck of an ice cream truck though!”

Janet Oldfield added: “We travel on M62 all the time. We live about 15 miles from our daughter in Leeds. It’s always like this. I’ll keep an eye out for an ice cream truck now.”
