‘Idiot’ driver blasted after being caught smoking with toddler, 2, who was in the back seat of a car without a seatbelt

An “idiot” driver has been slammed by police after being caught smoking with a toddler in the back seat of his car without a seatbelt.

Central Motorway Policing Group in the West Midlands stopped a motorist at the wheel of a silver BMW and found the two-year-old unbraked.

Police have criticized the driver’s actions, posting a picture of the car with an “angry” emoji over the license plate on social media.

Speaking on the force’s Twitter, a spokesman said: “This BMW was pulled over after the driver was seen smoking with a 2-year-old child in the car who was not wearing a car seat or seat belt.

“It was determined that when the driver was stopped he did not have a license or insurance so the car was impounded. Great upbringing.”

It is illegal to smoke in a car with someone under the age of 18.

The law was amended in October 2015 to protect children and young people from secondhand smoke.

Smoking while driving can be considered a distraction, as can eating or drinking.

Drivers caught face a £50 fine, while drivers can be fined £100 for careless driving if police believe they were not properly under control of the vehicle.

Commentators on social media were quick to respond to the incident, praising police action to stop the vehicle.

One person wrote: “Save a child’s life without a doubt. Just a pity that they are so young and unable to tell everyone else that their parents were a fool. #heroesdontwearcapes.”

Another person said: “No sympathy for her”

An outraged local called the driver an “idiot” and added: “I’m glad the toddler is okay before anything bad happened.”
