Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss has announced that he has been offered the opportunity to buy Chelsea, according to reports.
The 86-year-old has admitted interest in buying the Stamford Bridge club from Roman Abramovich, but is only part of a consortium.
Russian-Israeli billionaire Abramovich is understood to want to keep ownership of Chelsea.
But that could prove almost impossible if the UK Government imposes sanctions on the 55-year-old, who has owned the west London club since 2003.
Wyss has admitted that he will look into the details of any possible deal to buy Chelsea, with the asking price believed to be in excess of £2billion.
“Abramovich is looking to sell all his villas in England, he also wants to get out of Chelsea quickly,” Wyss told Swiss newspaper Blick.
“I and three others received an offer to buy Chelsea on Tuesday from Abramovich.
“I have to wait 4-5 days now. Abramovich is asking too much right now.
“You know, Chelsea owes him £2 billion. But Chelsea don’t have the money.
“As of today, we don’t know the exact selling price.”
Abramovich tried to push back his daily Chelsea run time on Saturday, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Blues boss has attempted to delegate “management and care” of Chelsea to trustees of the club’s charity fund.
That prompted the Charity Committee to contact the Stamford Bridge club for more details about Abramovich’s plans, after several commissioners raised concerns about the technical issue.
Labor MP Chris Bryant has called on the UK Government to impose sanctions on Abramovich after a number of Russian oligarchs have been subjected to such penalties.
Abramovich is said to have attempted to hand over control of Chelsea to trustees in an attempt to protect the club.
Chelsea owners will not receive any protection from sanctions through staying away from day-to-day control at Stamford Bridge.
A spokesman for Abramovich said on Monday that the Russian-Israeli businessman was trying to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
Swiss billionaire Wyss, who founded medical equipment company Synthes USA, insists he could only consider a deal with Chelsea with the participation of investment partners.
Wyss said: “I can imagine starting at Chelsea with the partners.
“But I have to check the general conditions first.
“But what I can already say: I certainly wouldn’t do things like this alone.
“If I buy Chelsea, it’s with a consortium of six to seven investors.”
