Jurgen Klopp insists Liverpool ‘should have scored more’ in Benfica win

Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has explained how Liverpool can ‘punish’ his side next season First League Collision.

Pep Guardiola Champions City hosts Liverpool at Etihad, in what was billed as a title decider, with just a point between opposing teams. City know beating Jurgen Klopp’s side will put them in pole position for a fourth title five years from now, with a four-point lead and just seven games left.

There is no slacking off for City in a string of games that will go a long way in defining their season. After Sunday, City go to Atletico Madrid for the second leg on Wednesday Champions League Quarterfinals, with Guardiola’s team leads 1-0. City meet Liverpool again the following Saturday at Wembley Stadium in the semi-finals FA Cup.

But Sunday afternoon’s Premier League title fight at the Etihad looks to be the game that could prove to be the finale of the campaign for both sides. The Liverpool visitors know that a win would take them to the top of the table and give them the momentum they need to head into the final stretch of the season.

Klopp’s side have won 17 of their last 18 games in all competitions and are the form team in the Premier League but are still a point behind champions City in the title race. The two played a vibrant 2-2 draw earlier in the campaign at Anfield and Sunday is expected to be another hard fought encounter.

Both sides are also in direct competition FA Cup and the Champions League this season, with the Reds aiming for an unprecedented quadrupling – having already secured the EFL Cup earlier in the season. City midfield star Gundogan has now issued a warning on how Liverpool can hurt them at the Etihad.

Gündogan explained on the Turkish TV channel Tivibu Spor: “Liverpool are currently one of the best teams in the world. You have reached incredible shape. The league game is going to be tough. We want to win against them at home. It will be a match between two teams of the same level. We mustn’t make mistakes. They are a very effective team on the counterattack. We are a team that likes to play with the ball. If we allow them to make a sale, they can punish us. We have to be careful.”

City are looking to successfully defend their Premier League title and secure their fourth crown in five seasons. Liverpool are aiming to retake and equal the league they won in 2020 Manchester United to 20 championship titles.
