I’m a Celebrity boss forced to cancel the show due to a World Cup clash

ITV faces a major dilemma later this year, when the World Cup in Qatar kicks off at the same time that the channel’s flagship reality show usually airs. To avoid a nightmarish clash, the channel announced that for the first time in its history the show has moved forward the start date of I’m A Celeb.

ITV bosses will broadcast I’m a celebrity… Get me out of here! from the end of October – to avoid clash with the World Cup of football.

Insiders say the hit show will launch three weeks earlier for the king or queen of the jungle to be crowned right before the tournament in Qatar kicks off.

Usually a summer event, the World Cup’ kicks off on November 21, the day I’m a Celebrity started last year. But this time, Boss is planning to premiere on October 30, so the show before Ant and Dec ends on November 20.

England were expected to perform well after reaching the Euro final last year so the decision was made to change the entire series rather than risk clashing with the tournament.

One insider said: “The best thing for viewers is to avoid the clash altogether. The last thing anyone wants is for the audience to have to choose between the latest game from the jungle and an England match.”

After two years in cold Gwrych castle, in North Wales, the show will return to Australia this year unless they are prevented by Covid restrictions.

Last month, ITV boss Carolyn McCall confirmed: “If we could go back to Australia – and this show means in Australia – that’s what we would do.”

The World Cup is also set to be brutal with BBC1’s Serious Dancing, which could move to Friday or to BBC2 as the big games get underway.

An ITV spokesman said it was “too early” to confirm the scheduling of this year’s I’m a Celebrity…
