A CYBER security expert has revealed where people go wrong with their passwords.

Trustwave SpiderLabs’ Gary De Mercurio says there’s a good reason why IT managers at work regularly ask you to change your password.

But people make the mistake of being far too predictable with their passwords.

“People will have these workarounds,” he told Help Net Security.

“You would be amazed how many people have exactly the same passwords.

“As smart as everyone thinks, the person next to you probably has a very similar password.

“Anytime it comes up with things like seasons or words like love, dragons, your birthday, your daughter’s birthday, any dates, 1492, 1776, someone has already used those, the password has already been leaked.

“Even company names, the state you’re in or the country you’re in, or the last time your team won a world championship, it’s all out there, there are people out there who think the same way She.”

He recommends that people use the Alt key on their keyboards to change characters to less obvious ones, making them significantly harder for hackers to crack.

But he cautioned that cybersecurity is an ever-changing thing, saying, “What’s safe today may not be safe tomorrow.”
