The NHS says headaches can last from 30 minutes to several hours.
They assert: “Most headaches go away on their own and are not a sign of something more serious.”
To get rid of headaches, the NHS recommends drinking plenty of fluids, getting plenty of rest if you have a cold and trying to relax as stress can make headaches worse.
You should also take paracetamol or ibuprofen to help relieve the pain.

- Reduced light: Bright or flashing lights can trigger a migraine. If you’re prone to them, cover your windows with blackout curtains during the day and try to wear sunglasses when outdoors. You may also want to add an anti-glare screen to your computer.
- Avoid chewing too much: Chewing gum not only hurts your jaw, but it can also cause headaches. And it’s not just chewing gum, the same is true for chewing on your fingernails, lips, inside or cheeks, or handy objects like pens. Avoid crunchy and sticky foods if you are in pain and remember to take small bites. If you grind your teeth at night, ask your dentist about a mouth guard as this can limit early morning headaches.
- Grab some caffeine: No, this is not a mistake. Small amounts of caffeine can often ease headaches and can even enhance the effects of over-the-counter pain relievers. However, too much caffeine can disrupt sleep and cause many different types of headaches. Moderation is key.
- Yoga: Whether it’s stretching, yoga, meditation, or progressive muscle relaxation, learning to relax when you’re having a headache can help ease pain.
- Limit alcohol: Alcohol can trigger migraines in about one-third of people who have frequent headaches. It has also been shown to cause tension and cluster headaches in many people.
For people with migraines, it can be frustrating that others don’t have them, leading many to wonder ‘why me’.
Dr Day explains that to answer the ‘why me’ question, genetics needs to be looked at.
A previous study found that there are 38 regions of the genome that are associated with migraines – meaning these regions could reveal how each individual is susceptible to migraines.
While this is a factor, there are also identifiable triggers when it comes to migraines.
“Common triggers for migraines include poor sleep, too much caffeine, skipping meals and using artificial sweeteners,” says Dr.
“Other risk factors for migraines include obesity, stress, alcohol consumption, hormonal changes, and excessive use of pain relievers.
“Persons with a genetic susceptibility to migraine may continue to experience migraine symptoms if they continue to be exposed to environmental triggers, such as those listed above. listed above.”
