The number of Irish men getting hair transplants has increased since the pandemic began – with Zoom meetings leaving many hard-challenged “on the brink of mental and emotional exhaustion”.
Dr Andre Nel, a hair restoration surgeon, with the HSW Clinic, says he has seen a 50 per cent spike in demand for hair transplants.
The surgeon, whose clients include phone-loving Alan Hughes and sports star Darran O’Sullivan, said: “Confidence is the biggest motivator for patients and I and my team keep it up. Communicating with our previous patients as they update us on the positive life changes the procedure has helped with.”
The hair restoration surgeon – based in Swords, Co Dublin – believes the number of men seeking hair transplants will continue to soar.
The South African native says: “I have built a loyal customer base over the past decade who have come to us on the brink of mental and emotional exhaustion from despair over hair loss now. changed, not only physically but also emotionally. ”
“There continues to be a stigma around the procedure, people seem to think that men don’t feel bad about their looks or that it doesn’t affect their emotional well-being so it’s nice to see the difference. increased demand for the procedure as it shows this stigma is diminishing.”

Famous faces who have undergone successful transplants include Wayne Rooney, Louis Walsh, Calum Best, Brian McFadden and RTE star Marty Whelan.
Dr Andre believes many people have a “healthier bank balance with minimal leisure activities” so they are investing in themselves.

Many of his patients have found the procedure “life-changing”.
