DOCTOR has revealed how twins can have different fathers.
It’s a rare phenomenon but it can happen, with two ways it can happen.
Neonatal intensive care specialist Dr Michael Narvey took his confused TikTok followers through the process.
The 49-year-old podiatrist from Winnipeg, Canada, said twins can have different fathers if “a woman has sex with two different men before ovulation and sperm are present during the pregnancy.” fallopian tube when two eggs are released”.
He also explained that it can happen if a woman has sex with two different men after ovulation and then sperm can fertilize the two eggs.
Dr Michael said it was an “extremely rare event” and people shouldn’t be too worried about it ever happening to them.
The video has been viewed more than 15,000 times, with viewers taking the scientific term for it as superfecundation.
One commented: “Sorry doc… What did you just say to me?”
Another said: “I think you said a bad word.”
This process is common in other animals, such as dogs, cats, and cows.
It is a deliberate tactic used by females to increase their chances of having multiple children.
But humans, who don’t need to have multiple children at once, are not inclined to do this – however it can happen.
It doesn’t even need to have sex with multiple partners at once or in very quick succession.
Rarely, sperm can survive for several days in a woman’s reproductive tract and a woman produces two eggs at once.
But the odds are very small – it means that the sperm must survive for days from both the man and the double released egg in the same cycle.
Experts had previously thought the chance could be one in 13,000 – although agree that is pure guesswork.
There are fewer than ten cases recorded in the world, although there will be many more unknowns.
In September 2020, a A woman in Wiltshire gave birth to twins three weeks apart – even though the boys have the same father.
Gabriella Christmas, 30, was delighted to find out she was pregnant, but at five weeks of ultrasound, a dark shadow was discovered.
But doctors told her the shadow was another baby in an extremely rare case of super eggs.
Gabriella found her second twin, Ezra, developing three weeks after her brother Eduardo. They are distributed together using a C-section.
