A PILOT has revealed what happened when the plane he was flying in was struck by lightning.
Harrison Murray shared One video explain what happens to an airplane when it is struck by lightning mid-flight.
He shared a video on Tiktok in response to the question: “If it is struck by lightning, will the plane still be able to continue its journey?”
He said: “Yes you can. What usually happens is that lightning will hit the plane, it will go straight through.
“We will check the aircraft systems to make sure everything is still working properly, then we will resume normal operations.
“When we get into the field, we’ll cover the maintenance control and the engineers and they’ll have to do some maintenance checks.”
One viewer commented on the video asking if Harrison had ever experienced it himself.
They said, “Has this happened to you before? Is it common?”
Harrison replied: “It flew out of London once! It hit the front of the plane, flashed and boomed. Yes. We continued on to Dusseldorf.”
While the idea of a plane being struck by lightning may terrify some passengers, it’s not uncommon and planes are designed to withstand lightning strikes.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) estimates that an aircraft is struck by lightning once a year – that is, once every 1,000 flight hours.
Typically when lightning strikes an aircraft, it will hit the nose or wings. The charge then travels through the fuselage before it leaves the tail.
It usually does not damage the aircraft and the flight will continue without any problems.
In fact, the sight of a plane being struck by lightning can frighten people on the ground more than passengers.
