SCAM-BUSTERS has highlighted the top mistakes Brits are making, exposing them to cyber crooks – potentially costing them hundreds of pounds.

A study published on Tuesday by the anti-fraud organization correctly found that nearly half of Britons have either been the victim of, or come close to, an online scam.

The survey, which was filled out by 2,000 adults across the UK, found that more than a third (37 per cent) of those people have lost money as a result.

Blame seems to be a lack of awareness as Brits fail to take basic security measures and they are subject to scams.

For example, less than a third of respondents regularly change their passwords, while just 45 percent are suspicious of free Wi-Fi spots in hotels and airports – a favorite hunting ground for scammers.

Speaking to The Sun, Rightly CEO James Walker said online fraud is a huge problem that isn’t talked about enough.

“It’s this hidden crime that victims are too embarrassed to talk about,” he said. “That’s why everyone gets away with it.”

“We talk about fraud happening, but no one sees the scale and harm it is causing to individuals.”

Online scams remain a hugely popular way of making money among criminal gangs, with scammers stealing £1.3billion last year.

They most commonly take the form of phishing scams, where an attacker poses as a bank or social media platform to obtain your passwords, email addresses, or other sensitive information.

From here, a craft crook can either use your details to scam you or pass the scam on to your friends and family.

To gauge the UK public’s readiness for fraud attacks, Rightly conducted an online survey of 2,005 adults in early June 2022.

Of those surveyed, 48 percent – nearly one in two – said they had been the victim of, or had come close to, a scam.

That figure rose to 64 per cent in London – the UK capital of fraud and scams.

According to the results, younger people are particularly at risk, with 42 percent of those aged 18 to 34 and the same proportion of those aged 35 to 44 having already been victims.

This is despite the fact that both of these groups generally said they were confident in avoiding online harm.

While consumers generally know they must use complex passwords to protect their accounts, they are missing important steps to strengthen their security.

For example, only half of Brits said they regularly opt out of having data used by third parties when visiting websites.

And only one in five refuses the cookie pop-ups that appear when browsing pages on the Internet.

Accepting any of these requests means you agree that your private information may fall into the wrong hands.

That’s because while your data is meant to be shared with marketing companies, it sometimes ends up on the dark web.

James said: “If you choose to share your information with these sites, you don’t know where it’s going, how it’s being shared or how it’s being used.

“That can end up with so-called data brokers who resell your data to hundreds of organizations if possible. Some of them could very well be scammers.”

To make life harder for scammers, Rightly recommends changing your passwords regularly and making sure you use separate passwords for each account.

Avoid passwords that contain personal information such as street names and pet names.

You should also avoid opting in to sharing data with third parties and refuse cookie requests whenever possible.

Finally, if you connect to a public Wi-Fi network, you should use a VPN (virtual private network) app, which encrypts everything you send and receive over the network.

If you are concerned that you have been scammed by a financial scam, the first thing you should do is contact your bank.
