A vegetarian has vented her frustration online after preparing a meatless meal for a party she was going to and was met with anger from her friends for not preparing meat.
Explaining her story on Reddit, the woman said she and her co-workers held a potluck where everyone was tasked with bringing a dish — and as a vegetarian, she brought home a homemade cheese dip with tortilla chips.
But after one of her colleagues had to abandon the event, she was asked to bring in a second dish to cover the missing attendee who was supposed to bring pulled pork.
And although the woman told her co-workers several times that she was a vegetarian and therefore wouldn’t touch pork, they didn’t listen, so she went ahead and made a meatless alternative with jackfruit instead.

in the her postShe explained: “I’m a vegetarian. I don’t really eat meat, so I never buy meat. My workplace was a small potluck with sandwiches, nachos, dips, etc.
“I was tasked with making a queso dip and bringing tortilla chips as I’m a vegetarian, not vegan, so I still eat dairy.
“The person doing the pulled pork for the sandwiches canceled the day before and no one else wanted to get up and bring something extra, so everyone asked me to make the pulled pork.
“I don’t eat meat and I don’t cook meat so I agreed but reminded her I’m a vegetarian and I don’t buy or eat meat so it wouldn’t be real meat. for the sandwiches and reminded her it’s not pork.”
The woman’s co-workers ate the jackfruit well, but when she went to prepare a plate of the delicious meatless alternative, they realized what they were eating and immediately “freaked out.”
She added: “Everyone ate them well and enjoyed them until I made myself a plate and everyone started asking why I eat pork. I reminded her it’s not pork. It’s jackfruit. Everyone got mad and turned off the I brought ‘fruit with BBQ sauce’ for their sandwiches.
“Honestly I’m quite upset and just told them not to eat it, but they seemed completely offended and shocked that the vegetarian brought a vegetarian dish after asking them to bring it.”
People in the comments were stunned by the reactions of their peers, with many saying they just seemed angry because they weren’t expecting to be able to enjoy a vegetarian meal.
One person said: “It’s a potluck, you bring what you want. I bet they’re mad they ate it and liked it.”
While another added: “You have given them sufficient warning. If they didn’t want a vegetarian dish, they could have made it themselves.”
And a third posted: “You told them more than once it wasn’t meat. It’s absurd to ask a vegetarian to bring the pulled pork anyway! They were probably just embarrassed at how much they liked the jackfruit.”
But others were skeptical of the poster’s honesty, as some said they didn’t think people had been fooled into believing jackfruit was real pork.
Someone wrote: “This is not real. The jackfruit substitute for pulled pork tastes great, but no one would ever mistake it for real meat. Especially not a whole room full of people and especially not after you specifically told them what you were going to bring.”
As someone else asked, “Your co-workers couldn’t tell the difference between jack fruit and pulled pork? What is this witchcraft?”
