Weaning your baby can be hard work – especially when figuring out what foods he likes and doesn’t like.

But for parents who have toddlers with food allergies, it can be even more stressful.

Nutritionist Lucy Thomas has revealed how to guide your baby through weaning and watch out for any potential allergies or intolerances.

Lucy, Organix’s picky eating expert, said it’s important to be able to recognize a deadly food allergy and how it differs from an intolerance.

She explained that a food allergy is a reaction of your immune system.

In some foods, she says, your immune system mistakenly treats proteins found in food as a threat.

“Symptoms usually appear quickly after eating a small amount of food, such as B. Rash, wheezing and itching.

“Common food allergies in babies and children include milk, eggs, fish, peanuts and other nuts,” she said.

Here are some things to watch out for when weaning, as food allergies can be deadly.

But intolerances are slightly different and do not involve the immune system, meaning there is no allergic reaction.

Lucy explained that food intolerances produce symptoms that appear gradually over a few hours after the food is eaten.

She added that symptoms only occur when the baby has eaten a significant amount of the food – as opposed to an allergy where the smallest piece of food could trigger a reaction.

Lucy said: “If you’re particularly concerned about how your child might react to a particular food, only use a small amount isolated.

“Encouraging your baby to smell, kiss, or just lick a new food is a great way to build her confidence with an unfamiliar food, but it also gives you a chance to pay attention to any reactions she may have can appear on his hands or face.”

As you try new foods with your baby, Lucy says there are a few ways you can encourage independent feeding.

The main signs of food allergies you need to know

Food allergy symptoms develop in the first few seconds after eating a food.

The NHS says the key signs to look out for are:

  • tingling or itching in the mouth
  • itchy rash
  • swelling of the face
  • difficulties swallowing
  • gasping
  • shortness of breath
  • dizzy
  • feel sick or be sick
  • stomach pain
  • Hay fever like symptoms

This includes chopping food into chopsticks and using soft-boiled vegetables.

“Lead by example and show your child how to brush their gums or teeth with a stick of soft-boiled carrots or other root vegetables.

“Join in with lots of enthusiastic ‘Ahhhh’ and ‘Cheeeese’ as you brush your own teeth to encourage them to do the same,” Lucy suggested.

She added that familiarizing your child with different foods can also help when they’re getting messy.

“Finger popping is a brilliant way to have fun, encourage independent feeding, and introduce only a small amount of food at first.

“Show how you can dip your own finger into a new food – this could be a puree, mash or a mash, and then suck your finger to make a loud popping sound!”

“Encourage your baby to do the same and praise them for their efforts,” Lucy added.
