Siva Kaneswaran talked about the lifestyle changes he made while getting through challenging training for Ice Dancing – including cutting out alcohol almost entirely.
he, the singer of boy band The Wanted, swapped out his microphone and leather jacket for a set of skates, as he flipped through this year’s show.
The former model (34), born in Blanchardstown to an Irish mother and a Sri Lankan, Tamil father, chose to step out of her comfort zone following the tragic passing of a team member Wanted, Tom Parker.
“One of the reasons I made this show is because last year we raised awareness about brain cancer and cancer in general, and witnessed it and the bravery of Tom – I think about your life and take advantage of the opportunities you can,” he said.
I’m doing it for Tom and for myself, for my family and make them proud
On his debut, Kaneswaran scored a remarkable 24 out of 40 from the jury, who included Olympic gold medalists Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. Kaneswaran has been hailed as a must-see in the latest series.
Once a professional athlete, he threw himself into grueling skating sessions, and quit drinking in pursuit of victory.
He said: “My knees really hurt for a number of reasons, but everyone has their own journey. “My birthday is in November, so I had a drink on the day of practice, and I was messed up the next morning.
“You have to strictly follow your diet and make sure that if you drink water – then do the opposite after that, which is to take care of yourself and drink lots of water.”

What’s more, fans of The Wanted will likely enjoy as he describes his hopes of performing one of his own songs.

His bandmate, Parker, passed away from a brain tumor 10 months ago, aged 33, leaving behind a wife and two children.
“It’s been tough, I’m not going to lie – to be honest, it’s been day after day and obviously I’m still grieving,” he said of the loss.
“It hasn’t been a year since we lost Tom, but it’s been great to be on the show and everyone is so positive, and I have really great contestants around me.”
He added that he will be honoring the memory of his beloved friend during the competition that started earlier this month.
Kaneswaran added: “I’m doing it for Tom, for myself, for my family and to make them proud and those who are watching.

The death of someone very close to him has made the male singer sometimes reflect on life and its fragility.
“I try not to take things for granted. I spend as much time as I can with my loved ones, because Tom’s point is to deal with everyday things,” he said.
“Who knows where you will be tomorrow, so I’m trying to take that message and carry on the memory of him and spark a conversation about cancer and the need to raise awareness. as well as pouring money into resources for treatment.”
